We often hear people talk about “conversational prayer,” but in reality most of our prayers are monologues. As I listened to a series of sermons by the late Dr. Ray Stedman on Old Testament prayers, I was struck by the fact that there were so many actual conversations between God and His people. These sermons became the basis for this Bible Study. If you wish to listen to or read Dr. Ray Stedman’s sermons on “Prayers of the Old Testament,” they are available at www.pbc.org.
A study in the Ten Commandments: The Decalogue is universally familiar, but frequently neglected for study. These lessons go through each commandment and examine all the implications and applications. Christians know they are saved by Grace and not by keeping the Law, but a fuller understanding of the Law will enrich your understand of God and His plan for His people. In over thirty years of studying the God’s word, no other Bible Study has had a deeper impact on my spiritual life than this one. I commend it to you without reservation and pray that you will come to love God’s Law and ask Him to give you the strength to obey it.
The little book of Jonah, only four chapters long, is easily taken lightly. The story is taught in every child’s Sunday school class. The reluctant prophet is rightly thought of as disobedient, self-centered and unrepentant. But the lessons from the book are many and we can find a bit of Jonah in each one of us. These lessons are filled with invitations to search your own hearts, and also lead you to see more clearly our compassionate, loving and forgiving God.
